With World Alzheimer’s Day being marked this Sunday, the executive director of the regional Alzheimer Society says it’s the perfect time to help erase the stigma around dementia.
With more than 55 million people worldwide diagnosed with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia, the aim of the annual focus remains raising global awareness of those not only living with the condition, but also those who provide for their care.
Jen Johnstone says locally, the day provides an opportunity to reflect upon a 2017 Alzheimer Society of Canada survey around stigma.
Johnstone says World Alzheimer’s Day also reinforces the message that those caring for someone with Alzheimer’s are not alone.
While there seems to be a day earmarked for just about everything, Johnstone says the annual global focus on Alzheimer’s has great value.
