Environment Canada has issued a Special Air Quality Statement for several areas in the South East Health Unit region due to wildfire smoke blowing in from the Prairies. The smoke is expected to cause poor air quality and low visibility throughout the day. Conditions may change quickly and vary from one place to another. Air quality is expected to improve from north to south.
The Air Quality Health Index (AQHI) helps people decide how to protect themselves from air pollution. Public Health warns that everyone is at risk during this advisory, but people with asthma, heart disease, diabetes, children, seniors, and those doing outdoor work or exercise face the highest health risks.
People are advised to limit time outside, close windows, and use air filters or purifiers indoors. If you must go outside, wearing an N95 mask can help reduce exposure.
