September is Suicide Prevention Month, a time to raise awareness, reduce stigma, and remind Canadians that help is available.
Mental health advocates say recognizing the warning signs of suicide and reaching out with care can help save lives.
Some common signs include talking about hopelessness, feeling like a burden, withdrawing from loved ones, mood swings, reckless behaviour, or talking about death. Giving away personal belongings may also be a warning sign.
If someone shows these signs, experts say it’s important to talk to them and connect them to help.
Free and confidential support is available 24/7 by calling or texting 9-8-8, Canada’s national Suicide Crisis Helpline.
The Canadian Mental Health Association also offers resources online at ontario.cmha.ca.
In any emergency, call 9-1-1 or go to the nearest emergency room.
No one has to face a mental health crisis alone. Help is always available.
