A $19,100 grant from the Ontario Trillium Foundation is helping give youth in Tyendinaga Mohawk Territory more ways to stay active and connect.
Hastings—Lennox and Addington MPP Ric Bresee met with the Mohawks of the Bay of Quinte on Friday to celebrate the installation of new basketball nets at three community parks.
Bresee shared how thrilled he is to see the support from the Province and the Trillium Fund, but acknowledged it also took a lot of support from the community too to make this project possible.
The funding came from the provincial government’s Capital Investments Grant. The refreshed courts at Bayshore, Lower Slash, and Huron Brant Drive North parks now offer a safe, fun space for young people to play close to home.
Chief R. Donald Maracle said the improvements help create safe outlets for young people now and into the future.
Coach Susan Barberstock shared she and her fellow coaches are grateful for these upgrades, as they often hear from their players they don’t have any spaces in the community to continue to work on their skills.
Barberstock shared they recently played at an Indigenous basketball tournament in Arizona where their boys finished in the top 16 and top 8. Two kids are also currently in Hawaii.
The new nets add to recent park upgrades, including play structures installed two years ago.
