Cervical Cancer Awareness Week is currently underway across Canada.
It’s a week to help raise awareness about the disease and prevention along with early detection and treatment.
Cervical cancer develops in the cells of the cervix and is one of the most preventable forms of cancer, thanks to effective screening, vaccination, and early treatment options.
In Canada, routine Pap tests and HPV testing help detect abnormal cervical changes before they become cancerous, while the HPV vaccine—available through doctors, nurse practitioners, and pharmacists—offers strong protection against the virus responsible for most cases.
Health care providers play an essential role in prevention and early detection, from administering vaccines and conducting screenings to guiding patients through treatment and follow-up care.
Cervical Cancer Awareness Week serves as a reminder for everyone to stay up to date on their cervical cancer screening and to talk with their health care provider about HPV vaccination and risk reduction.
Jen Belcher, Vice President of Strategic Initiatives with the Ontario Pharmacists Association talks about the importance of early detection.
Belcher talks about when you should get screened.
She says it’s important to talk to your local healthcare professionals, and that both doctors and pharmacists can play a role.
