July 24 marks International Self-Care Day—and South East Health Unit Deputy Medical Officer of Health Dr. Linna Li says it’s the perfect time to pause and check i n with yourself.
Chosen by the World Health Organization, 07/24 represents the idea that self-care can happen seven days a week, 24 hours a day.
Dr. Li explains self-care doesn’t mean luxury spas. It’s about simple, daily habits that support mental, physical, and emotional health—like drinking water, taking walks, turning off your phone, or setting boundaries.
She highlights five key types of self-care: physical, emotional, mental, social, and spiritual. People don’t need to tackle them all every day—but being aware of what’s needed most in the moment is vital.
Dr. Li reminds people that even five minutes of breathing or a quiet lunch break can make a difference.
