As students settle into school, the South East Health Unit is reminding families of the importance of nutritious meals and snacks.
Dr. Linna Li, Deputy Medical Officer of Health, says children spend much of their day at school so nutrition outside the home is important to keep top of mind.
Registered dietitian Dana Douglas advises parents to include at least one item from each category on Canada’s Food Guide in school lunches.
Water, white milk, or unsweetened fortified soy beverages are recommended over sugary drinks.
Dr. Li says common challenges like uneaten food can be solved by involving children in planning lunches, using easy-to-open containers, and practicing at home with school lunch containers.
And the doctor says make sure you pack those lunches properly.
For before- and after-school snacks, fruits, vegetables, and whole-grain options are encouraged. Families should keep foods safe using insulated bags, ice packs, or pre-warmed thermoses, and always wash hands and produce.
More tips are available at the health unit’s website under the Healthy Eating tab.
