Mosquitoes carrying West Nile virus have been found in the Picton area, according to the South East Health Unit. It’s the first confirmed case in Prince Edward County this year, and the second in the region following a positive test in a crow in Brockville in July.
West Nile virus is spread to humans and animals by infected mosquito bites. Most people have no or mild symptoms, but severe cases can cause brain inflammation. Early signs include fever, muscle pain, stiff neck, confusion, or vision changes.
Health officials urge residents to take precautions during peak mosquito season, which runs from mid-July to late August. They recommend wearing long sleeves and using insect repellent, especially at dawn and dusk.
Residents should also remove standing water and report clusters of dead birds.
