With Peterborough getting set to implement automated speed enforcement cameras, there is a provincial debate taking place on the purpose they serve.
Premier Doug Ford made comments earlier this week about the cameras being a ‘tax grab’ and saying he’d like to see cities remove them.
Peterborough mayor Jeff Leal says using the cameras is all about enhancing safety in specific areas.
Leal adds the Premier does make fair points about more appropriate signage around the cameras and maybe allowing some leeway for drivers.
City council approved a pilot project earlier this year that will install four automated speed cameras in designated Community Safety Zones. The program will cost an estimated $489,000, covered through the 2025 Capital Budget. The cameras are expected to rotate between various locations, allowing city staff to assess compliance rates, logistics, and potential for future expansion.
Research from other Ontario municipalities, including Ottawa, Guelph and Toronto, shows that automated speed enforcement helps improve driver behaviour and pedestrian safety.
