Volunteers in Brighton have long been described as the lifeblood of the community – and for the 51st edition of Brighton’s signature Applefest, some volunteer help is still needed.
The municipality’s advisory committee is calling on residents, service groups, businesses and students who can spare some time to help at this year’s festival.
Volunteer support is needed at the beloved street fair from 6 a.m. to noon or noon to 6 p.m.
These volunteers help direct vendors to booth spaces before the street fair opens, help keep things running smoothly throughout the day, and serve as a point of contact for visitors and residents with information relating to Applefest events, shuttle bus services, area attractions and local growers/orchards, as well as help guide vendors out of their spaces at the end of the day.
At the children’s village at King Edward Park, there are volunteer shifts from 7 a.m. to noon and from noon to 6 p.m. Again, volunteers serve as a point of contact for festival attendees, work with on-site co-ordinators to keep the fun rolling, and help supervise and ensure safety during children’s village activities.
Volunteers at the children’s village also need a valid police records check.
Finally, volunteers are also needed to help fuel the car show at Brighton Public School. Duties include directing cars from the road and helping park cars during setup, serving as a point of contact, and keeping things motoring smoothly over the course of the show.
For Brightonians interested in chipping in, there’s more information – including application forms – available via the municipality’s website or by contacting the municipality.
Volunteer training is provided, as well as lunch and refreshments during shifts.
This year, there will also be a post-event celebration at Northumberland Fine Foods later in October as a way to thank volunteers.
This year’s Applefest runs Thursday, Sept. 25 to Sunday, Sept. 28. Volunteers are needed on Saturday, Sept. 27.
High school students are eligible for volunteer hours, note municipal officials.
