UPDATE: Belleville police have arrested a 43-year-old after a deadly hit-and-run crash on Highway 2 late Wednesday night. Emergency crews were called to the scene around 10:48 p.m. on July 2, where a 36-year-old Belleville man had been hit by a vehicle. The victim was taken to Belleville General Hospital but was pronounced dead.
On July 3, with help from the Criminal Investigations Division and the Traffic Safety Unit, officers arrested Joseph Scott Nestler of Belleville. Police charged him with failing to stop at an accident resulting in death. Nestler was later released and will appear in court at a future date.

The Belleville Police Service says emergency crews, including police, fire and paramedics, responded to reports of a pedestrian hit by a vehicle on Hwy. 2 between Mitchell Road and Burns Drive on Wednesday, July 2, 2025, at about 10:48 p.m.
A 36-year-old Belleville man was transported to hospital at the scene and then pronounced deceased, reported police.
Police said no vehicle was at the scene, but glass and debris were scattered on the road.
The investigation is ongoing, and police are calling on any witnesses, anyone with dashcam footage between the hours of 10:30 and 11:30 p.m. on July 2, or anyone with information relating to a vehicle that has damage to its windshield, to step forward.

The roadway was closed into Thursday morning for the on-site investigation but has since reopened.
