Students in Fleming College’s Arboriculture program will showcase their skills at the annual Tree Climbing Competition, taking place September 9 at the Frost Campus Arboretum in Lindsay.
The event runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Outdoor Education Centre, with a rain date set for September 10. Students will compete in five timed events — Tree Rescue, Throw Line, Belayed Speed Climb, Ascent, and Work Climb — testing both technical skill and efficiency.
Winners in the men’s and women’s divisions will earn grand prizes and the chance to advance to the International Society of Arboriculture’s provincial and national Tree Climbing Championships. Many of the event’s judges are Fleming alumni who once competed in the same challenge.
Each event highlights a different aspect of arborist training, from rescuing a 200 lb. dummy in a tree rescue scenario to racing to ring the bell at the top of a 15-metre climb.
