The Bay of Quinte has announced the results of its first-ever 40 Under 40 awards, recognizing young leaders making an impact across the region. More than 200 nominations were submitted, and the competition was so strong that 44 winners were chosen instead of 40, including a group nomination for the Belleville Police Services Community Resource Unit.
Among the local winners is Napanee café owner Adam DeMerchant. After living in New Brunswick and discovering modern coffee culture, DeMerchant returned to his hometown to bring that experience to rural Ontario. He now runs his own café in Napanee and is known for his passion for community, family life with his wife and two daughters, and his love of soccer—despite rarely winning games.
Another local winner is Ben Hagerman, Manager of Economic Development and Communications for the Municipality of Brighton. A Stirling native now living in Napanee, Hagerman has over a decade of municipal economic development experience. He is also the head coach of the Napanee Raiders hockey team, where he mentors young athletes while promoting community growth.
Also recognized is Ashley Lough, a full-time correctional officer, tactical team leader, and entrepreneur who owns Black Barn Co. with locations in Napanee and Picton. Beyond her career, she is a nationally recognized fitness competitor and a strong advocate for community causes, including mental health, PTSD awareness, and autism support networks. Deeply supported by her husband and three step-children, Lough continues to make an impact both personally and professionally.
The celebration event takes place September 25 at Signal Brewery with tickets available at BayofQuinte.ca/4040.
