The Township of Stone Mills is renaming the Tamworth Community Baseball Field in memory of Elsie Dowhaluk, a beloved local volunteer known as “The Canteen Lady.” The field will now be called the Elsie Dowhaluk Memorial Ball Park.
For over 50 years, Elsie was a fixture at the ballpark, running the canteen, cheering on players, coaching, and helping with fundraising. Her dedication and joyful spirit made her a beloved figure in the community.
A special celebration will take place on Saturday, July 26 from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. at the newly renamed park, located at Bridge Street West and Ball Park Drive in Tamworth. Free hot dogs and cake will be served.
Town officials say Elsie’s legacy will live on through her family, who continue to support the community in her honour. Everyone is welcome to attend and celebrate Elsie’s life and lasting impact.
