Nineteen Northumberland County businesses are getting a boost through the Starter Company Growth Program, with $44,500 in micro grants awarded to help support business development and expansion.
The program is delivered by the Business & Entrepreneurship Centre Northumberland (BECN) and offers selected entrepreneurs a mix of training, mentorship, and networking, along with grants of up to $3,000 per business.
This summer’s cohort reflects the region’s vibrant business landscape, with recipients representing industries including food and beverage, retail, health and wellness, professional services, agriculture, and education. Among the successful applicants are River’s Edge on Front in Hastings, Dirty Dog Cider Company in Colborne, and Mindful Meridians PEMF and Float Centre in Cobourg.
The funding helped some improve customer experiences with better signage or digital marketing, while others expanded physical space, accessibility, or service offerings.
Eligible businesses must be located in Northumberland County and operating for at least six months. The next intake is expected in fall 2025.
BECN Business Development Coordinator Kailyn Coupland says the program is part of a broader effort to help small businesses thrive and encourages residents to support local entrepreneurs by shopping and dining close to home.
