As a fire safety scam continues to circulate, Northumberland OPP says residents should exercise vigilance.
This latest scam was initially brought to OPP’s attention through the Office of the Fire Marshal, explains Northumberland OPP Const. James Clarke, who is urging residents to do their research and not make any hasty decisions.
He tells us more about how fraudsters are attempting to dupe people.
How can people spot the scam?
Clarke tells us more about some of the signs people should watch for.
“Remember folks, if something feels suspicious, trust your instinct and carry out some research into the service or product – do not provide payment or personal information to unknown individuals or businesses,” stresses Clarke.
Police also continue to encourage residents to report suspicious activity to their local police detachment and the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre online or by calling the centre at 1-888-495-8501.
The centre also has helpful tips on how people can protect themselves against all kinds of scams online.
What’s more, Clarke says additional information around fire safety requirements – including approved alarm standards – is accessible through local fire departments and the Office of the Fire Marshal.
“We always remind residents to verify the legitimacy of any fire safety products, and when in doubt, consult your local fire department or a certified dealer.”
According to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre, Canadians have already lost more than $340 million to scammers and there have been more than 17,000 victims so far this year.
