Underground infrastructure work in Harbour Street Brighton area is wrapping up and focus on the Prince Edward Street/County Road 64 reconstruction project is shifting as of today (Wednesday, July 9.)
Northumberland County and Municipality of Brighton officials said this shift to Prince Edward Street between Harbour and Cedar streets marks a major step in the multi-year project.
This work will also mean a full road closure for through-traffic from early July until the end of September.
“This phase marks the most significant portion of the 2025 effort and will involve major detours,” noted officials.
However, local access is supposed to be maintained for residents within the closure zone to reach their homes.
Meanwhile, to help minimize congestion and avoid “tight turning movements” near the construction zone, another detour route is now being added, officials have announced. This detour is being established for heavy vehicles and through-traffic, including large commercial trucks, multi-axle vehicles and buses.
“All heavy vehicles and through-traffic vehicles are encouraged to use this bypass route to reduce delays and improve safety for all road users,” explained officials.
The detour route will be along Hwy. 2 with access to 64 via Stoney Point Road.
“This detour is intended to prevent congestion and maneuvering challenges in residential or restricted areas near the construction closure.”
This work is part of year two of a three-year project to fully modernize County Road 64 through Brighton. As previously reported, the current phase of construction will tackle replacement of underground sewers and water mains, new and upgraded sidewalks, along with installation of pedestrian crossovers and cycling lanes, intersection improvements and other traffic calming measures and full asphalt repaving.
Final paving and surface work isn’t slated until later this fall and will only have lane restrictions as opposed to full closures.
