Online child exploitation is steadily rising, and police are urging families to stay vigilant and take an active role in keeping children safe.
Between September 22 and 26, 14 agencies from Ontario’s Provincial Strategy to Protect Children from Sexual Abuse and Exploitation on the Internet focused on cases of children self-exploiting online. Officers spoke with 282 affected families, with the average age of children generating material between five and nine years old. Peterborough Police Service was among the 25 police agencies participating in the broader Provincial Strategy.
The Provincial Strategy coordinates law enforcement across Ontario, sharing resources, investigative techniques, and information to protect children from online predators.
Police are encouraging parents to monitor their children’s online activity and to learn more about keeping kids safe at the Canadian Centre for Child Protection.
Anyone with information about online child exploitation should contact local police or report it at cybertip.ca. If a child is in immediate danger, call 9-1-1.
