Peterborough native Porter Martone has taken a major step in his hockey career, being selected sixth overall by the Philadelphia Flyers at the 2025 NHL draft in Los Angeles tonight.
The 18-year-old right winger and captain of the Brampton Steelheads in the Ontario Hockey League is now the second-highest drafted Peterborough-born player in NHL history, tied with Cory Stillman, who went sixth to the Calgary Flames in 1992. Barrett Hayton, who went fifth overall to the Arizona Coyotes in 2018, remains the highest drafted Peterborough native.
Standing 6-foot-3 and weighing 208 pounds, Martone combines size, skill, and leadership. During the 2024–25 OHL season, he recorded 37 goals and 61 assists for 98 points in 57 games — setting new franchise records for points and assists with the Steelheads.
Martone also captained Team Canada at the 2024 IIHF World U18 Championship, where he set a Canadian record with 22 points and helped lead his team to a gold medal.
Scouts have compared his physical and competitive playing style to NHL stars like Corey Perry and Matthew Tkachuk. His blend of skill and grit has made him a standout prospect and a player to watch in the years ahead.
Martone’s selection marks a milestone for Peterborough hockey and signals the arrival of a player ready to make an immediate impact at the professional level.
