Peterborough Petes goaltender Easton Rye is off to a historic start this season, earning Mary Brown’s Chicken OHL Goaltender of the Week honours after two strong victories last week.
Rye went 2-0 with a 1.50 goals-against average and a .952 save percentage. He stopped 34 of 35 shots on Thursday as the Petes crushed the Brampton Steelheads 7-1, then added 26 saves on Saturday in a 6-2 win over visiting Kingston, lifting Peterborough to 14-8-1-1 and fourth in the Eastern Conference.
With 13 wins on the season, the 19-year-old hometown netminder now sits atop the leaderboard for the most wins in the OHL, tied with Flint Firebirds’ Mason Vaccari. Remarkably, he is also tied for the most wins across the entire Canadian Hockey League, matching Moncton Wildcats’ Rudy Guimond of the QMJHL, who is a Detroit Red Wings NHL draft pick and helped Moncton capture the QMJHL championship last season.
To put Rye’s rise into perspective, he had 10 wins in 29 games last season and entered this season with a total of 11 career wins. His current 2.77 goals-against average and .914 save percentage over 19 games highlight his rapid improvement and consistency. The 6-foot, 196-pound goaltender owns a career record of 24-22-3-2 with a 3.63 goals-against average and .898 save percentage through 57 regular-season games since being selected 89th overall in the fifth round of the 2022 OHL Priority Selection.
The Petes return to the ice Thursday, November 27, hosting the North Bay Battalion at the Peterborough Memorial Centre. Puck drop is 7:05 p.m., with tickets available online, at the box office, or by calling (705) 743-3561. For anyone unable to attend the game, you watch the action on YourTV or listen to Peterborough Kia Petes Hockey on Freq 90.5.
