Mayor Jeff Leal says the provincial government has offered clear direction and reassurance regarding community concerns around GE Vernova’s proposed demolition of its former Park Street North site.
Leal issued a statement after receiving a detailed letter from Environment, Conservation and Parks Minister Todd McCarthy on Friday, addressing questions about potential public health and environmental impacts linked to the planned teardown at 107 Park St. N.
“I am very pleased that the Minister has responded so comprehensively, and in a manner that reflects the urgency and sensitivity of this issue for our community,” Leal said. He added the content of the letter covers issues that would have been discussed in a meeting, and he is no longer requesting one “in respect of the Minister’s time.”
McCarthy’s letter states the ministry has not yet received a detailed demolition plan from GE Vernova. When one is submitted, his staff will review the proposal, provide technical recommendations and ensure provincial regulatory standards are met.
The minister noted transparency and public confidence are priorities, citing the site’s “technical complexity, historical sensitivities and local knowledge.”
He encouraged Leal, council members and city staff to work with Peterborough District Manager David Bradley for further discussions as the process unfolds.
Leal said the city will continue to communicate with provincial officials on environmental risk mitigation and information-sharing between agencies responsible for oversight on behalf of the community.
The former General Electric property has been the focus of local attention as residents wait for updates on demolition timelines and contamination concerns.
More information and environmental documentation related to the site is expected to be shared publicly as the provincial review proceeds.
