Four people died in separate collisions on Ontario Provincial Police (OPP)-patrolled roads over the Thanksgiving long weekend, as the OPP joined Canadian policing partners for Operation Impact.
Officers laid more than 8,800 traffic charges across the province, targeting behaviours that put drivers and passengers at serious risk. Speeding accounted for just over half of the offences, with 4,518 tickets issued. Other charges included 158 stunt driving offences, 170 impaired driving charges, 130 for distracted driving, and 377 for seatbelt violations, including passengers failing to buckle up.
Since the start of the year, the OPP has responded to 244 fatal collisions, claiming 279 lives. Most of these incidents were preventable, the police said.
The OPP reminded drivers that traffic laws only work if everyone follows them and thanked those who drove safely during one of the province’s busiest traffic weekends.
