Fleming College will see expanded enrolment in its construction and trades programs as part of a $75-million provincial investment aimed at training more workers for Ontario’s growing infrastructure needs.
The funding, announced Thursday, will create up to 7,500 new seats at colleges and Indigenous Institutes in programs such as welding, carpentry and renovation techniques, and 300 graduate-level seats for urban and land use planners by 2028. The province says up to 7,800 additional students will be trained for in-demand jobs in construction and planning.
“Our government has bold plans to build the Ontario of tomorrow, and it is critical that we have the homegrown, highly skilled workers to get it done,” said Colleges and Universities Minister Nolan Quinn. “From designing roadways to building homes, this investment will ensure our students have the training they need to launch rewarding, in-demand careers.”
Northumberland-Peterborough South MPP and Labour Minister David Piccini said boosting training capacity now will help secure jobs for the future. “Each of these additional seats will help ensure Ontario workers can land better jobs with bigger paycheques,” he said.
Fleming College is among 13 colleges across the province set to expand construction program enrolment as early as September 2025.
