The Ontario government is investing $10 million to help build the South Bowmanville Recreation Centre in Clarington, part of the $200 million Community Sport and Recreation Infrastructure Fund.
Officials say the project will transform the existing facility into a state-of-the-art community hub with a FIBA-standard double gymnasium, a 25-metre lap pool with therapeutic tank, a FIFA-size indoor turf field, five multi-purpose spaces and one of Ontario’s longest outdoor refrigerated skating trails.
The upgrades are expected to support more than 50,000 users annually and provide programs for all ages – from youth day camps to rehabilitation-focused aquatic therapy for seniors. Minister of Sport Neil Lumsden says the project will protect jobs and drive economic growth by attracting major sporting events to the region.
Mayor Adrian Foster calls the centre a modern multi-sport destination that will create lasting memories and boost Clarington’s profile as a sport tourism destination in Durham Region.
