The Ontario government is investing nearly $60 million to expand and upgrade camping opportunities at provincial parks across the province, including Sandbanks, Arrowhead, and Bon Echo.
The funding will add 300 new campsites and upgrade 800 existing sites with electrical service over the next three years. At Sandbanks, the closest provincial park to Northumberland County, up to 73 campsites will be electrified by summer 2026, providing more comfortable and accessible options for campers. Procurement for the electrical upgrades began this summer, with construction set to start later this month.
Sandbanks Provincial Park attracts approximately 750,000 visitors each year with its expansive sandy beaches, world-class baymouth barrier dunes, and more than 12 kilometres of hiking trails. The upgrades are expected to enhance visitor experiences while supporting local tourism and the Bay of Quinte economy.
Minister of the Environment, Conservation and Parks Todd McCarthy called it the largest expansion of Ontario Parks in 50 years, aimed at meeting growing demand for outdoor recreation. Local leaders, including MPP Tyler Allsopp and Prince Edward County Mayor Steve Ferguson, emphasized Sandbanks’ importance as a natural destination and its role in sustaining tourism jobs.
The government says the project will make Ontario Parks more accessible for families, campers, and outdoor enthusiasts while providing lasting benefits to local communities and the environment. Additional parks and details on new campsites will be released as projects progress.
