A routine grocery trip turned into an arrest for an off-duty police officer Wednesday evening after witnessing a shoplifting attempt in Peterborough’s north end.
The incident happened around 6 p.m. on Wednesday at a store near Towerhill Road and Chemong Road, where the officer intervened after store staff stopped a man allegedly trying to leave with more than $350 worth of unpaid merchandise.
The off-duty officer took the man into custody and contacted on-duty officers. A subsequent investigation revealed the 63-year-old Peterborough man was already wanted on several outstanding warrants, including assault, assault with a weapon, failure to comply with an undertaking, and failure to attend court.
He was arrested on the strength of those warrants and further charged with theft under $5,000.
The accused is being held in custody and is scheduled to appear in court on Thursday.
