Peterborough-Kawartha MPP Dave Smith is calling on all levels of government to unite with industry stakeholders and economic development professionals at a meeting this week to address growing economic concerns in the Peterborough region.
The meeting, which will be held on Thursday, aims to build a joint strategy to counter recent business relocations and job losses, and to strengthen the city’s economic future. A lack of large-scale, contiguous employment lands has been identified as a key barrier to local growth.
Smith says municipal, provincial, and federal representatives will collaborate to understand the causes behind recent downsizing and to develop solutions that promote job retention and business competitiveness. The insights gathered will help shape a unified action plan focused on reversing current trends and supporting long-term economic sustainability in Peterborough.
Just last week, two announcements were made by Lufthansa InTouch and Coca Cola Canada, which runs a Minute Maid facility on Lansdowne Street, that will see hundreds of jobs leave the city.
