The family of Alf Curtis is remembering the longtime Peterborough businessman as a devoted husband, father and grandfather who built a legacy rooted in hard work, family and community.
Curtis died peacefully in his 94th year, surrounded by loved ones at Peterborough Regional Health Centre’s palliative care unit.
He is survived by his wife of 73 years, June, their children Brenda and Larry, five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Born on a family farm near Pontypool, Curtis moved to Peterborough as a child. He developed a knack for working with his hands and for mathematics, skills that guided his career. He worked as a lead hand building cedar strip boats and canoes at the Canadian Canoe Company before moving into aluminum siding and related trades.
In 1975, Curtis and his wife launched Alf Curtis Home Improvements Inc., a business that continues to operate in Peterborough today. Friends and family recall his motto: “If it’s worth doing, it’s worth doing well.”
The Curtis family extended gratitude to the staff at PRHC and the Fairhaven Riverside Special Care Unit for their care and compassion.
Visitation will be held September 11th at Ashburnham Funeral Home, with a funeral service on September 12th, followed by interment at Rosemount Memorial Gardens.
The family asks that donations be directed to the Fairhaven Long Term Care Foundation or the Alzheimer Society.
