Harley Farms grows natural meat business with family values near Keene.
James Harley with his partner (and sister) Emily along with his parents Julie and Roger have been farming near Keene, Ontario, since moving to Canada from the UK in 2000. They practice natural farming methods and have developed their own branded line of meat products under the Harley Farms name.
Their operation includes a farm store located on the property, a butcher shop in Peterborough that offers fresh cuts like steaks and chops ready for the barbecue, and an online store delivering products across Ontario via their own refrigerated trucks. This approach offers customers multiple convenient options to access natural, healthy meat.
James grew up on the farm and after a break for college, returned with a vision to build the farm’s brand and tell its story. His sister joined him in expanding their branded packaged products. Though working with family has its challenges, James says it is ultimately rewarding.
Farming is more than just a business for James, it’s a lifestyle. He hopes to pass on the values of hard work, connection to the land, and care for animals to his two young children, Jackson and Simon. Harley says that long-term planning is essential, as the decisions made today will affect the farm’s success 20 years into the future.
Visitors to Harley Farms can also enjoy interactive activities such as hand-feeding Nigerian dwarf goats and bottle-feeding lambs. The farm offers tours to showcase their commitment to animal welfare and sustainable agriculture.
