Greater Napanee’s mayor is urging the Prince Edward–Lennox and Addington Social Services board to make housing and homelessness a top priority at its upcoming summit.
Mayor Terry Richardson asked that the agenda for the October 1 housing summit include the need for a comprehensive housing and homelessness strategy. The request follows a recent resolution from Greater Napanee council, which called on the County of Lennox and Addington to consult the public and develop a stronger plan under Ontario’s Housing Services Act.
Richardson says residents are frustrated and want clarity on what housing authorities are doing to address the crisis in streets and parks. He says people do not feel heard, and there is little confidence that an effective plan is in place.
The County of Lennox and Addington is provincially mandated to manage affordable housing and homelessness in the region, while PELASS delivers those services to both counties.
Napanee officials say the town has been left to absorb growing costs, with more than $200,000 in budget impacts last year, plus added pressure on fire, by-law, and legal services.
Richardson says Greater Napanee is ready to help but wants measurable goals, wide consultation, and regular public reporting.
