A collection of historic Napanee Beaver newspapers may soon be moved from a private garage to the North Fredericksburg Community Hall for safekeeping.
The idea follows a public deputation in April by residents Heidi Lind and Cameron Eadie, who urged council to preserve the papers locally rather than risk losing them.
Currently stored in a garage, the old newspapers document decades of local history. Town staff raised concerns about the lack of a climate-controlled facility and manpower, and instead suggested transferring the collection to the National Archives in Ottawa.
Councillor Bill Martin, a member of the Heritage Advisory Committee, voiced concern that sending the papers to Ottawa would mean the community might never see them again.
Martin supported a staff alternative to store the collection at North Fred Hall on a temporary basis.
Council is now considering the proposal to ensure these valuable records stay close to home.
