The Recreation Advisory Committee in Greater Napanee has recommended holding two community cleanup days, with one set for Earth Day and the second possibly on Sept. 28, World Rivers Day.
Council discussed that a previous cleanup cost about $3,300 in staff time and resources. The budget does not currently allow for a second cleanup day, but it may be considered in next year’s budget.
Officials said volunteers signing waivers alone may not provide enough insurance protection if the cleanup is organized as a municipal event. Staff supervision is necessary for proper coverage.
The committee is encouraged to seek partnerships or sponsors for funding. The Atura Fund was mentioned as a possible source for supporting such community projects.
Council has asked staff to provide more details on supervision and funding to help inform future budget decisions.
