The Peterborough Century 21 Lakers closed out their final home game of the regular season with a 9-6 win over the Brampton Excelsiors on Thursday at the Memorial Centre. The victory came on Fan Appreciation Night in front of the largest crowd of the season, 3,460 fans.
The Lakers, who have already secured second place, will face the Brooklin Lacrosse Club in the first round of the Major Series Lacrosse playoffs. Scheduling for the series will be announced shortly.
Peterborough’s offense was well-distributed, with three goals scored in each period. Thomas Hoggarth led the way with a hat trick, including an impressive around-the-world goal in the second period.
“I caught the ball… a defenseman jumped at me… it kinda tied my hands up, the only option I had was around the back and I just tried to get it on net and I got lucky and it went through his legs… not much to it,” Hoggarth said modestly.
Carter Page and Holden Cattoni each contributed two goals, while Taite Cattoni and Joe Resetarits added three assists apiece.
The Lakers made the night extra special by taking their annual team photo before the game, hosting Five Counties Children’s Centre and over 500 campers and counsellors from Camp Moshava during the match, and signing autographs after the final whistle.
Goaltender Nick Rose made 34 saves and enjoyed the lively atmosphere, noting that it was his first time playing in front of a Moshava crowd, even as a visitor.
“The building was loud and rocking. They were an electric factory,” Rose said. “It’s always fun to see our fans up close; some don’t recognize us without the gear on at times, but it’s awesome to be able to get them some autographs and get fired up for playoffs.”
Brampton’s goalie Connor O’Toole, son of former Lakers’ Mann Cup champion Pat O’Toole, made 35 saves in the loss. Jacob Janke led Brampton with three goals and three assists.
The Lakers will wrap up the regular season on Sunday at 6 p.m. against the Cobourg Kodiaks at Jack Burger Arena in Port Hope.
