The Haliburton Kawartha Pine Ridge District Health Unit and Peterborough Public Health have issued an extended heat warning for parts of Central and Eastern Ontario. The warning takes effect Saturday, August 9 through Tuesday, August 12, with Haliburton County expected to cool off one day earlier.
Daytime highs are forecast to reach 31 °C, and humidex values may climb to 39, while overnight lows will remain in the uncomfortable 20-23 °C range. With limited overnight relief, public health officials warn that this prolonged heat poses serious health risks.
Those most vulnerable include seniors, young children, people with chronic illnesses, persons working outdoors, pregnant individuals, and those experiencing homelessness. Heat-related illnesses-such as heat cramps, dehydration, and heat stroke-can escalate quickly and require prompt attention.
To protect yourself and others, residents are advised to:
- Stay hydrated-drink plenty of water, even if not thirsty
- Avoid strenuous activity during peak heat hours
- Keep homes cool-close blinds, shut off heat-generating appliances, wear loose clothing
- Use cooling options like cold showers or damp towels
- Never leave people or pets in parked vehicles
- Check in on neighbours, especially those at higher risk
- Visit local cooling centers when needed
