Staff at a local manufacturing company got a big surprise when they discovered an unusual animal inside a shipping container from Mexico.
The call came in to Sandy Pines Wildlife Centre on the evening of June 16. With no photos available, staff couldn’t identify the animal. Food and water were left overnight for the animal until help could arrive.
The next day, volunteer rescuer Greg Oosting visited the site, safely contained the animal, and brought it to Sandy Pines. Staff identified it as a Cacomistle – a raccoon-like animal native to Central America with a ringed tail.
The animal was frightened but in good shape. Sandy Pines’ founder, Sue Meech, reached out for advice and connected with Little Ray’s Nature Centre in Ottawa. The centre specializes in handling exotic wildlife that enter Canada by accident.
Plans are underway to transfer the Cacomistle to Ottawa, proving once again that it takes a village to help wildlife in need.
