The Commonwell Mutual Insurance Group is investing $400,000 in local Ontario communities through its fifth annual Learning and Engagement Accelerator Fund (L.E.A.F.) program, supporting community-led initiatives in libraries, schools, and learning hubs.
Across the province, 17 projects received funding this year, with grants ranging from $10,000 to $50,000. Cobourg received $30,000 for its project “Bridging the Digital Divide: Access, Learning, and Connection,” which aims to improve technology access and learning opportunities for local residents.
Since the program’s launch in 2021, L.E.A.F. has awarded $2.6 million to 71 projects across Ontario, demonstrating steady growth and impact. In 2025 alone, the fund received nearly $7 million in requests from 216 applicants, highlighting the increasing demand for community support.
Tim Shauf, President of The Commonwell Mutual Insurance Group, says the initiative reflects the organization’s commitment to “Building Member Value by caring beyond us and beyond now,” supporting projects that strengthen communities today while laying the foundation for future generations.
Local brokers play a critical role in the program according to Commonwell, promoting grants within their communities and helping ensure projects align with local needs. Cobourg’s $30,000 grant is one example of how local knowledge and involvement help bring projects to life, supporting residents in gaining access to technology, resources, and learning opportunities.
Other funded projects include playground upgrades, youth climate councils, early literacy programs, and community transportation initiatives across Eastern, Central, and Western Ontario. By partnering with communities, L.E.A.F. continues to energize local learning, engagement, and participation, strengthening capacity and resilience across the province.
