The search for a suitable location for a winter warming hub in Cobourg continues this week, as Northumberland County Council holds its third special meeting this month to address the issue.
Several sites are under consideration, including St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, the Columbus Community Centre, and a County-owned property on Courthouse Road, where the new Golden Plough Lodge long-term care home is nearing completion.
That same location is at the heart of a notice of motion to be presented by Cobourg Mayor Lucas Cleveland at Wednesday’s Town Council meeting. Cleveland’s motion recommends that the County designate a dedicated, fully separated emergency warming room within the new Golden Plough Lodge site-complete with independent access, security, and support staff-to operate during periods of extreme cold.
The mayor’s proposal emphasizes that the warming room must remain physically and operationally distinct from long-term care areas to protect both vulnerable seniors and residents seeking shelter.
According to the County Council agenda, more than 125 letters or statements have been received from individuals, churches, and organizations commenting on the “Winter Warming Room Location” item, underscoring the urgency of the issue.
This week’s meeting follows two earlier virtual sessions, where councillors discussed the challenges of balancing community safety, accessibility, and neighbourhood impact.
