A planned staff reorganization at the Peterborough Public Library, expected to result in the loss of one full-time position, has been paused as the City explores alternative ways to meet 2025 budget targets.
The reorganization was part of a strategy to reduce the Library’s projected 2025 operating budget increase from 10.9 per cent to around 8 per cent, as approved by City Council. However, city officials say they are now engaging in constructive discussions with Library staff to find solutions that maintain service quality while meeting financial constraints.
The City says children’s programming would have been maintained under the initial plan, albeit delivered differently.
Officials acknowledged the strong public support for the Library and reaffirmed their commitment to ongoing dialogue with staff and CUPE Local 1833 as both budget and collective bargaining discussions continue.
The reorganization is among several cost-cutting measures in the 2025 budget, including ending lifeguard services at Rogers Cove beach, ceasing ice maintenance for skating near the Lift Lock, and raising transit fares by 25 cents.
