A new café at Riverview Park and Zoo is serving up more than just coffee, it’s promoting conservation with every cup.
Hatch Coffee Shop officially opened its walk-up window this morning in the zoo’s playground area, offering Bird Friendly, fairtrade, and organic coffee from Birds and Beans. The café uses compostable cups and also sells baked goods, gluten-free options, cold drinks, fruit, candy, and ice cream bars.
The project is a collaboration between Riverview Park and Zoo and Bird Friendly Peterborough, aimed at showing how small environmental choices, like bird-safe windows and certified coffee, can help reduce bird collisions and support wildlife.
Riverview CEO and Curator Manager Cathy Mitchell said the café is also a way to educate the public about conservation. Coffee is a great topic to discuss conservation, it’s international, so we must consider not just the impact we are having on the environment locally by running a café, but the effect we are having on the farming landscape on a whole different continent, by buying coffee beans grown 1000’s miles away
Hatch will operate Wednesday to Sunday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. through Labour Day, then weekends only into the fall and winter.
