Northumberland County’s Winter Warming Room is opening for the season Nov. 2, providing overnight shelter for people experiencing homelessness during the colder months.
The facility, located at 600 William Street in Cobourg, will operate seven nights a week from 8 p.m. to 8 a.m.
The county is also seeking volunteers to help serve refreshments, organize donations and spend time with guests. Volunteers can contribute as little as an hour, with no minimum time commitment.
Manager of Homelessness Services Bill Smith says even a friendly conversation can help visitors feel welcome and supported.
Those interested can apply through Northumberland.ca/Volunteer. Successful applicants will receive an interview, orientation and training.
