Families will have an opportunity to explore nature and learn about Indigenous teachings during a special event Oct. 8 at the Carstairs Trailhead in Northumberland County Forest.
The Indigenous Story Walk and Restoration Planting Event will bring together children, caregivers and community members for a morning of storytelling, outdoor activities and environmental stewardship.
The event is being presented with support from the TD Friends of the Environment Foundation and in partnership with Alderville First Nation, Dnaagdawenmag Binnoojiiyag Child & Family Services and EarlyON Child and Family Centres.
Participants will follow an interactive story walk featuring Indigenous teachings about the relationship between people and the land, healthy ecosystems and environmental responsibility.
The program will also include hands-on planting, with participants helping add trees and native plants to the forest. Organizers say the restoration work will contribute to habitat and biodiversity while giving children an opportunity to take part in protecting natural spaces.
Representatives from Alderville First Nation will share Indigenous knowledge, while EarlyON staff will lead family-friendly activities focused on outdoor exploration and early learning.
The free event runs from 10 a.m. to noon. Families are encouraged to dress for outdoor conditions and wear suitable footwear. Planting materials and activity supplies will be provided.
