Ian West is running for mayor of Port Hope, where he was born and has lived in the same home since 1983. He says his connection to the community, particularly the Ganaraska River and fishing, played a major role in his decision to enter municipal politics.
West says his interest in local issues developed while pursuing a career in the fishing and hunting industry. He says he ultimately decided to run because he wants to remain in Port Hope and believes the entire municipality should be represented.
Priorities
West says two of his main priorities are finding new ways for the municipality to generate revenue and making use of opportunities connected to the local fishing industry. He also identifies development at Wesleyville and the potential for jobs and apprenticeships as another major area of focus.
West says Port Hope has an economic opportunity in its fishing and tourism sectors, arguing that attracting anglers and visitors could bring more spending into the community. He also says Wesleyville could provide opportunities for apprenticeships, skilled trades and other employment.
What Sets Him Apart
West points to his lifelong connection to Port Hope and his experience in the fishing industry as important parts of his perspective. He says he has travelled throughout North America for fishing and has promoted Port Hope and the Ganaraska River along the way.
West says that experience has shaped his view of the municipality’s potential, particularly when it comes to attracting people who want to fish, spend time outdoors and visit the community. He also says he wants to see both Ward 1 and Ward 2 included in Port Hope’s economic development.
Why Port Hope?
For West, his connection to Port Hope is deeply personal. He says he has lived in the same house since childhood and that the community and the river helped shape both his interests and his life.
West says he wants to build a community where young people have opportunities to stay, where businesses can grow and where residents can work together regardless of how they voted. He says his goal is to be a mayor who is visible throughout the municipality and accessible to the people who live there.
