The Municipality of Port Hope and Port Hope Police Service are reaffirming their commitment to combating hate-motivated crime following recent events in Belleville.
Mayor Olena Hankivsky says Port Hope stands in solidarity with Belleville’s Jewish community and Jewish communities across Ontario, stressing that antisemitism, intimidation and violence have no place in the community.
Port Hope police say they are working with municipal officials and police services across Ontario to share information and strengthen responses to hate-motivated incidents. The service has a detective constable trained in hate-motivated crime, while Chief Tim Farquharson is completing specialized training on antisemitism and hate crime through the Friends of Simon Wiesenthal Center.
Port Hope police were also recently placed on operational standby to support policing operations in Belleville following events at the Sons of Jacob Synagogue.
