The Town of Cobourg is reminding residents to dispose of leaves, grass clippings and other yard waste properly as the fall season continues.
Officials warn against dumping yard waste into creeks, rivers, lakes or storm drains, saying decomposing material can contribute to algal blooms, reduce oxygen levels and harm aquatic life.
Residents are encouraged to mulch leaves, compost yard waste or use designated paper yard-waste bags for scheduled Northumberland County collection.
The town also says yard waste should not be placed on roads, where it can create a hazard for motorists.
