Two Port Hope residents are facing animal-cruelty charges after police say three pets were abandoned for about a month inside a rental unit in Kawartha Lakes.
Police launched an investigation late last month after officers attended the residence and found one dog dead, another in critical condition and a cat in poor health.
The Ontario SPCA was called in to assist, and the surviving animals were removed and provided with veterinary care.
Police say their investigation identified two suspects and uncovered evidence that contradicted information provided during interviews.
Investigators determined the accused had left the Kawartha Lakes area and were living in Port Hope. Police allege the animals had been left without adequate food, water, care or suitable living conditions for approximately one month.
On Sept. 20, a 38-year-old Port Hope woman was charged with cruelty to animals causing unnecessary pain, suffering or injury under the Criminal Code, as well as failing to provide standards of care under the PAWS Act.
