A four-hour public planning meeting in Cobourg drew strong opposition Wednesday to proposed redevelopment of the former Brookside Youth Centre site on King Street East.
Highland Hills (Cobourg) Inc. is seeking approval for 970 residential units on the 30-acre property, including semi-detached homes, townhouses and four apartment buildings ranging from eight to 16 storeys. Plans also call for 5,000 square metres of commercial space, including a grocery store.
Residents and councillors raised concerns about traffic, parking, fire protection, infrastructure, density and the impact on three heritage buildings on the property.
The proposal includes traffic improvements and a public park leading to historic Strathmore House. The meeting was consultative only, with no decisions made. Councillor Brian Darling said final approval could still be one or two years away.
