Northumberland OPP have recovered a stolen vehicle near Hastings and charged a 17-year-old following a police search in Trent Hills.
Police say the incident began Wednesday morning when the vehicle was spotted travelling eastbound on Highway 401 near Cobourg. The vehicle had reportedly been stolen from the Niagara Region earlier in the week and allegedly failed to stop for police shortly after 9 a.m.
At about 2:15 p.m., an officer patrolling County Road 35 was alerted to the vehicle by the cruiser’s Automated Licence Plate Recognition system.
The vehicle was later observed travelling northbound on County Road 25.
Officers attempted to stop the vehicle at a commercial property in Hastings, but police say it again failed to stop.
A short time later, the vehicle was found abandoned on Lakeshore Drive.
Northumberland OPP, assisted by the OPP Canine Unit, conducted a search of the surrounding area. Police say one individual was located in a nearby field and taken into custody.
Police remained in the area until approximately 5:30 p.m. and thanked residents for their patience and cooperation during the investigation.
A 17-year-old from Quebec has been charged with:
- Possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000
- Two counts of dangerous operation
- Two counts of flight from a peace officer
The youth is also facing a number of Highway Traffic Act offences.
The accused was held for a bail hearing before the Ontario Court of Justice in Cobourg.
The youth cannot be identified under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.
