It’s nearly time once again for the annual Terry Fox Run which has taken place every year since 1981 following Fox’s death in 1980.
Fox, who had lost his right leg to osteosarcoma, started his journey in St. John’s, N.L., on April 12, 1980. He ran with an artificial leg and hoped to raise one dollar for every Canadian.
His first day covered about 12 miles from Outer Cove Beach, with supporters and a police escort accompanying him as he began his cross-country campaign. Fox ended his Marathon of Hope in Thunder Bay, Ontario, on Sept. 1, 1980.
After running for 143 days and covering about 5,373 kilometres, Fox was forced to stop when cancer was found to have spread to his lungs.
Here in Northumberland County the run is observed every year as it is right across the Country and Paul Appleman, Community Co-Chair from Port Hope, is gearing up for the 46th run which takes place Sunday September 20th.
Paul set up a Team in honour of his late Mother who until her death at 91 years of age attended the race every year.
There are two routes set up this year for those who want a lighter run or walk and another for the more adventurous among participants.
Appleman adds that there will be refreshments and entertainment on the day of this very important annual event.
Registration begins at 8AM and the race begins at the Port Hope Town Hall beside Memorial Park.
