A speed enforcement initiative on Highway 401 in Brighton has resulted in drug trafficking charges against two men.
Northumberland OPP say officers were conducting speed enforcement in the westbound lanes of the highway at about 10:45 a.m. on August 27 when they spotted a passenger vehicle allegedly travelling 145 km/h.
Police say the driver initially failed to stop when directed by officers. The vehicle was later stopped and officers began a drug investigation.
OPP say quantities of suspected fentanyl, methamphetamine and cannabis were seized, along with Canadian currency and drug trafficking paraphernalia.
Two people were taken into custody.
Mitchell Byfield, 24, of Etobicoke is charged with possession of an opioid for the purpose of trafficking and possession of methamphetamine for the purpose of trafficking.
He also faces several driving-related charges, including speeding, failing to stop for police, failing to stop on the right for an emergency vehicle and driving with cannabis readily available. Byfield was also charged with several document and licence-related offences.
Albert Adu-Boateng, 26, of North York is charged with possession of an opioid for the purpose of trafficking, possession of methamphetamine for the purpose of trafficking and failing to comply with a release order.
Both accused were held for appearances before the Ontario Court of Justice in Cobourg.
The charges have not been proven in court.
