Miracle Treat Day is giving Northumberland County residents a sweet way to help children facing medical challenges.
Participating Dairy Queen locations will donate proceeds from every Blizzard Treat sold on Thursday, Aug. 13, to Children’s Miracle Network. Money raised locally will support SickKids hospital in Toronto, helping provide equipment, treatment and services for young patients and their families.
Sarah Whitfield understands that impact personally. Born five-and-a-half weeks early, she needed a stomach, pancreas, liver and bowel transplant during her first year of life. SickKids and Children’s Hospital in London cared for her during that difficult journey.
Now 29, she credits the treatment she received as a baby with giving her the opportunity to grow, work and enjoy everyday life.
Whitfield says community fundraising helps hospitals obtain resources that public funding may not fully cover.
This year’s event will include a display coordinated by Whitfield and organizer Wendy.
Before-and-after photographs of young SickKids patients from the area will be placed behind the counter, letting customers see some of the children and families connected to their purchases.
A face painter will also entertain children from 3 to 9 p.m. Whitfield plans to meet families and supporters throughout the busy afternoon and evening.
Residents can help fund care for the next child facing a frightening diagnosis by enjoying a Blizzard Treat at a participating Dairy Queen location.
